Adjudication No. 1050 (September 1999) [1999] APC 44

ADJUDICATION No. 1050 (September 1999)

The Press Council has dismissed a complaint brought by Jeremy Beck against The Age arising out of an article entitled "Putting our greenhouse in order" published on 26 June 1999.

The article quoted extensively from experts supporting the existence of this effect. Mr Beck considers that the greenhouse effect is not supported by sound scientific evidence and that the article, in failing to present the alternative view, breached a number of Press Council principles.

The Age indicated that it would have been prepared to consider the publication of a letter from the complainant putting the alternative view but that Mr Beck had not submitted such a letter.

Newspapers are entitled to present a particular view on a controversial issue. The subject of the article is one that attracts differing and strongly held opinions from many experts and has been covered widely in the press over many years. The writer was entitled to put forward his view of the matter.
