REMARKS TO FAREWELL

THE HONOURABLE JUSTICE GEOFFREY NETTLE, AC

AS A JUSTICE OF THE HIGH COURT OF AUSTRALIA

KIEFEL CJ: The handing down of this judgment marks the last occasion on which we will sit as a Full Court with our colleague Justice Nettle. It is regrettable that he and Justice Gordon cannot be with us in Canberra today because of continued COVID‑19 restrictions.

Justice Nettle was appointed to the Court in February 2015 after long and distinguished service as a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria. He brought that experience and a broad knowledge of the law to this Court. Although his Honour served as a Justice of this Court for a relatively short period he has contributed much, both to the jurisprudence of the Court and to the collegial discussion which is a necessary precursor to any decision. We shall miss his industry, his fine intellect, and we shall miss his good company.

The Court thanks Justice Nettle for his valuable service and wishes him and his wife Wendy well for the future.

The Court will now adjourn to reconstitute.
