The Land and Environment Court of New South Wales, as part of its implementation of the International Framework for Court Excellence, commissioned a project with AustLII to use AustLII's databases to generate relevant metrics and statistics concerning the Court. These provide information concerning the frequency and nature of the citation of decisions of the Land and Environment Court by other courts or tribunals.
The project outcomes include information about the use made of the Court's decisions by academic journals that are publicly electronically accessible. The project also enables extraction of information about what are the most frequently cited decisions of the Court as well as about the general rate of accessing the Court's cases through AustLII's databases.
The project has generated this information not only as a resource able to be accessed through the Land and Environment Court and AustLII websites but also to provide useful material for publication in the Court's Annual Report.
The Court and AustLII welcome any suggestions as to how this data might be made more useful. Comments or suggestions should be provided to the Court, for the attention of its Senior Commissioner, by e-mail to lecourt@justice.nsw.gov.au
The material generated by this project is set out in the following graphs and other information.
The list below shows the broad categories of documents where documents from the Land and Environment Court database on AustLII have been cited. Two things should be noted by this data. First, it includes internal citation - that is, cases and other documents (such as presented paper) from the Court that cite other Land and Environment Court documents. Second, the range of law journals able to be accessed by AustLII's indexing process is limited to publicly accessible material and does not include a number of proprietary subscription based journals.

This table shows the specific databases that cite this database (including itself).
The following list shows the 10 most frequently cited Land and Environment Court cases on AustLII.
The following list shows the most recently cited cases from the Land and Environment Court database on AustLII.
The rapid increase in the number of documents in the Land and Environment Court database from late 2003 is as a result of the decision of the the Chief Judge of the Court deciding to publish, electronically, decisions of Commissioners of the Court. Prior to late September 2003, the only decisions of the Court that were published electronically were those made by Judges of the Court.
Total number of documents: 13491
This graph shows the number of citations of documents from the Land and Environment Court database on AustLII by reference to the year of entry of the document into the database. It shows this citation data as a snapshot as at the date of this report. The citation pattern will change over time and it is likely that the rate of citation of documents more recently entered into the database will increase over time.
This graph shows the source year of documents accessed from the Land and Environment Court database on AustLII.
Total number of accesses/requests: 55817 (December 2017)
This graph shows the citation trend for all documents citing this database and their distribution across the years.
This means that as at the date of generation of this graph, the final number shown reveals the number of documents for that time that cited documents from the Land and Environment Court database on AustLII. The downward trend at the most recent point of the graph reflects the lower likelihood of very recent decisions of the Court being cited. A more informative and accurate trend line would be derived from disregarding the current year's data (and depending on the data displayed, perhaps the previous year's data).
