Perhaps most significant is the complete restructuring of the AustLII Legal Links pages [see below]. A new employment opportunity at AustLII, a new member of the AustLII team and some details about improvements in our High Court and Federal Court databases are also included in this edition of the News from AustLII. Geoff ------------------------------ NEW AUSTLII LEGAL LINKS STRUCTURE http://www.austlii.edu.au/links/Australia/ http://www.austlii.edu.au/links/World/ After much thought and development, we have reached the end of a complete restructuring of the AustLII Legal Links pages. For some background to the changes and a brief user guide, have a look at . Adding Links If you have a legal link which has not yet been added to the AustLII Legal Links pages, find the category which seems most appropriate and use the [Add a Link] button for a fill-in form where details can be entered. Correcting/Changing Links If you have a change to an existing link, send us email at links@austlii.edu.au with some current details about the link and the changes or corrections which you would like. ------------------------------ EMPLOYMENT WITH AUSTLII http://www.austlii.edu.au/austlii/employment.html With thanks to the Law Foundation of NSW (our major funding body), AustLII now has an opening for a person to work on Primary Legal Materials. Responsibilities will include the mark-up and management of large collections of primary legal materials, including the legislation and materials from various courts and tribunals. Essential requirements for this position are: Tertiary studies in Law (or Librarianship), and computing skills which include some level of programming. It would also be desirable for this person to have a knowledge of HTML, Unix, and an assortment of Internet protocols. Contact: Geoffrey King (Manager) at employment@austlii.edu.au ------------------------------ WELCOME TO KIRSTY MAGAREY AustLII has a new Project Officer, Kirsty Magarey, a lawyer with a library and web background at the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library, and experience in human rights issues while at the Commonwealth Attorney-General's Department. Kirsty will be principally responsible for AustLII's Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation projects, for our co-operative work with the Australian Human Rights Information Centre and other related projects. Kirsty can be contacted via email at kirsty@austlii.edu.au ------------------------------ HIGH COURT CASE UPDATES http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/cases/cth/high_ct/ http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/cases/cth/high_ct/recent-cases.html High Court cases are now being updated within 24 hours of being provided to AustLII. Cases have been updated to the 10th of October. For technical reasons the cases are not immediately searchable, but we are working on this issue. Look out for our subscription service which will be available shortly! ------------------------------ SUPERLEAGUE CASE http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/cases/cth/federal_ct/96000870.html http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/cases/cth/federal_ct/96000870.rtf Just a quick note to inform interested parties that the SuperLeague case was downloaded over 2500 times within a week, after being made available via AustLII just over a week ago. AustLII thanks the Federal Court for their cooperation in bringing such a sought-after case to AustLII users (and the Internet) so quickly. Our rough calculations suggest significant cost savings to both the public and the court in using the Internet for the timely distribution of legal materials. ------------------------------ SEPTEMBER AustLII STATISTICS SUMMARY 440,000 pages of HTML (approx.) 12,465,000 hypertext links 2,390 MB of indexed text 787,875 'hits' in September 55,796 'sessions' in September 2,405 peak daily users 119 peak concurrent users 37,365 peak daily requests ------------------------------ Please feel free to distribute 'News from AustLII' either electronically or in print form.
