The conference will be opened by Sir Gerard Brennan AC, Chief Justice of Australia, by videolink from the High Court. ------------------------------------------- NEW HIGH COURT CITATION http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/cases/cth/high_ct/recent-cases.html From 1 January 1998, the High Court of Australia has adopted a new form of court-designated citation which is vendor-neutral and medium neutral, and includes paragraph numbering. An example of the new citation is 'Kendle v Melsom [1998] HCA 13 at 5' - a reference to the 5th paragraph of the 13th decision by the Court for 1998. Examples of cases with the new citation and paragraph numbering can be seen in 1998 High Court cases in 'Recent Cases' on AustLII (URL above). AustLII advocates the adoption of court-designated citations and paragraph numbering by all Australian Courts and Tribunals, and welcomes the High Court's initiative in this area. ------------------------------------------- NEW AUSTLII STAFF APPOINTMENTS AustLII has had quite a few new staff appointments and changes over the last few months. Geoffrey King, AustLII's Manager since our inception in 1995, has moved to Indonesia, but continues to 'telecommute' to work part-time for AustLII as Technical Consultant on systems and software matters. Geoff has been the mainstay of AustLII's founding years - AustLII would not have existed without his dedication - and we all give him our sincere thanks and best wishes for the future. We are very pleased that he can continue to contribute to AustLII in a consulting capacity. Philip Chung is AustLII's new Manager, moving up from his previous position as Primary Materials Manager. Philip and Daniel Austin are together handling the system administration tasks previously carried out by Geoff, as well as their responsibilities for primary legal materials. Joseph Kwok has joined us to work on primary legal materials, and particularly on industrial law materials, thanks to a grant from the Australian Business Chamber. Joseph is completing his industrial trainee year in computer science, and his law degree. Siobhan McCann has joined us to work on 'secondary' legal materials and special libraries, including indigenous law and human rights materials. Siobhan, an Arts and Law graduate, has previously developed a database of Antarctic treaties. She joins David Irvine, who has moved from part-time to full-time work for AustLII, to form AustLII's secondary materials/special libraries team. Kirsty Magarey has completed her 'tour of duty' as Project Manager for AustLII's indigenous law project, and has returned to her position in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library's research service. We are grateful to Kirsty for the enthusiasm for indigenous law issues and human rights that she brought to her time with AustLII. Tejinder Gill is AustLII's new part-time Administrator, and Cathy Thompson has joined us part-time to provide editorial support for the development of primary legal materials databases. ------------------------------------------- UPGRADES TO SERVER AND RAID STORAGE In the upcoming weeks, AustLII will be upgrading to an Enterprise 3000 server as well as increasing the size of our RAID storage by another 40 Gigabytes. The upgrades will allow us to provide a better service for our users. Any scheduled downtimes will be posted on AustLII's homepage. The first one is scheduled for the weekend of the 7th and 8th of March. Please bear with us during this upgrade period. ------------------------------------------- NEW DATABASES AND HOME PAGES Some recent databases and home pages added to AustLII: Tasmanian Magistrates Court http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/orgs/tasmagct/contents.html Community Services Appeals Tribunal of NSW http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/cases/nsw/csat/index.html Australasian Law Teachers Association http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/special/alta/ ------------------------------------------- AUSTLII USER GUIDES http://www.austlii.edu.au/links/AustLII/User_Guides/ The most current AustLII User Guides, including both a 100+ page manual and a 4 page 'Quick Guide' are now available for downloading.
