Abstract/Description:

This chapter focuses upon the land rights of rural dwellers of Ethiopia who consists of the 83 per cent of the total population and depend upon land for survival and acquire land through egalitarian community-based land tenure regimes. It examines the link between the land rights regime and poverty, particularly in the context of lack of adequate legal protection and dominance of the market. It argues that the community-based tenure is a primary factor in the survival of the rural poor and the lack of adequate legal protection of community rights plays a significant role in sustaining rural poverty.
