Adjudication No.  767  (December 1994) [1994] APC 76

ADJUDICATION NO.  767  (December 1994)

Mrs Asuman Attila complains to the Australian Press Council about an article headed "Atilla's raids cost him $800" (the name being spelt that way in the headline and article) published in the Manly Daily. The story in question was a court report of Mrs Attila's son who was placed on a three year bond and find $800 in Manly Court after burglaries.

Mrs Attila claims that the Manly Daily article exploited what happened with a "cheap, sensationalist headline". She claimed that "if his name had been anything other than Attila, his case would never have received such excessive coverage".

The court report in question details items stolen in two burglaries and sentencing details.

Whilst the Manly Daily did use a heading which it agrees makes a "labored link" between the accused's name and a historical figure, the use of such a heading is not considered to be in breach of Press Council principles.

The complaint is dismissed.
