Relevant Sections: Long title: An Act to authorize the raising of Money for Railways and Purchase of Native Land.
Schedule: Purchase of Native land... £ 500,000.
Commentary: This Act authorises a loan of £ 500,000 to purchase Maori land in the North Island. This is part of the system of greatly expanded public works and immigration policies and some of the land would be used for the construction of railways. It was proposed that the Government would pay 2 shillings an acre for Maori land and would resell it for 10 shillings an acre. Ngatata said that Maori would not sell their land at that price or any other.
