PENALTY UNITS AND OTHER PENALTIES AMENDMENT BILL 2015 BILL 20 OF 2015

                                      FACT SHEET

Penalty Units and Other Penalties Amendment Bill 2015

The Penalty Units and Other Penalties Amendment Bill 2015 amends the Penalty Units and
Other Penalties Act 1987 in relation to the value of a penalty unit.

The current value of a penalty unit is $140. This value is unlikely to increase under the
current indexation formula set out in the Penalty Units and Other Penalties Act for some
years.

It has been a key government commitment to increase fines and make criminals pay.

This Bill provides that, for the 2015-2016 financial year penalty units will not increase in
line with CPI and will, instead, rise to $154, a 10% increase on the current value, and an
increase of $24 since the Government was formed.

For future financial years, penalty units will continue to rise in accordance with inflation.

Any additional monies raised through these changes will be utilised across government
to maintain essential government services and programs.
