Mansour, Julia --- "Editor's Introduction" [2007] AUIndigLawRw 1; (2007) 11(1) Australian Indigenous Law Review x

EDITOR’S INTRODUCTION

After 10 years of publication, the Australian Indigenous Law Review (‘AILRev’) has made the transition from a reporter to a journal. The change reflects the increased online availability of primary source material in Indigenous affairs, and the growing need for Indigenous-specific commentary articles on legal changes within Australia and in the international sphere. From Volume 11.1, the AILRev will be published as the Australian Indigenous Law Review.

While the format of the AILRev has shifted to reflect the primacy of commentary pieces, headnotes recording significant court and tribunal decisions in Australia and overseas have been retained. Likewise, the AILRev will continue to include a digest of information pertaining to a selection of recent determinations, legislative developments, inquries and reports, policies and procedures, agreements and treaties, speeches and Indigenous statements, and international developments.

While many individuals have contributed to the development and formation of the new format of the AILRev, the editor would like to express her personal gratitude to her assistant editor, Luke Taylor, and to the former editor, Erin Mackay, without whom the publication of this first Review would not have been possible. The editor also wishes to thank the ILC’s co-ordinator, Tony Westmore, for his instrumental support for, and dedication to, the AILRev.

In 2006, the Indigenous Law Centre celebrated the 25th anniversary of its foundation. 2006 also marked the arrival of the new Director of the ILC, Megan Davis. The ILC warmly welcomes Megan, and looks forward to the vitality and energy her leadership will bring the Centre in the coming years. The following text reprints Megan Davis’ speech as incoming Director of the ILC, given at the ILC’s 25th Anniversary Celebrations in December 2006.
