At the Broken Hill Court of Petty Sessions on 17 June 1981 Constables Robert Murray and Mark Vaughan were committed for trial on charges of having assaulted an Aborigine, Mr Colin Harris, at Wilcannia Police Station. The policemen were charged by summons taken out by the Internal Affairs Branch of the NSW Police Force, which responded to a complaint from the Western Aboriginal Legal Service. Mr Bruce Brown SM directed that the defendants stand trial at the Broken Hill District Court on 14 September 1981.
