New ALS Established

An Independent Aboriginal Legal Aid Service has been established at Katherine in the Northern Territory.

Its full name is the Katherine Regional Aboriginal Legal Aid Service (KRALAS) and it was formerly a satellite service of the Northern Australian Aboriginal Legal Aid Service (NAALAS). The service area it will cover is that of the middle Northern Territory between NAALAS and the Central Australian Aboriginal Legal Aid Service, approximately one quarter to one third of the Territory containing a population of 8-10,000 people.

The independent Katherine service has been a project since 1983/84 and taken two years to eventually materialise. A new governing council was formed just recently and the Administration Officer, in realily the Director, is James Grant who has been the acting Administrative Officer for the last ten months.

The service will employ senior solicitor and solicitor who at this stage have not been selected. Until they appear NAALAS will provide a circuit visitation to handle civil and criminal matters.

The Editors and the Aboriginal Law Research Unit wish Katherine all the best for the future.
