First Woman Regional Director

Ms Pat Turner is the new Regional Director of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, Alice Springs.

Her appointment is significant for several reasons: she is the only female officer of the Depadment in the Senior Executive Service - and the only Aboriginal woman currently serving as Regional Director.

Bill of Rights

The Senate Standing Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs had referred to it by the Senate on 19 April 1985:

the desirability, feasibility and possible content of a national Bill of Rights for Australia.

The inquiry is at large. No particular model is before the Committee. When referring the matter the Senate directed:

that the Committee, in the course of its inquiry, not consider the provisions of any Bill on this subject prepared by the Government unless such Bill has been introduced into the Parliament and the Senate has authorised the consideration of the provisions of that Bill by the Committee.

When the Committee advertised the reference and invited submissions, it was requested that submissions be lodged by 28 June 1985.
