Kakadu and the Senate

There is a current inquiry by the Senate Standing Committee on National Resources into the potential of the Kakadu National Park. During May it held a series of public hearings in Canberra, Sydney and Darwin. The reference for the committee is to investigate:

The potential of the Kakadu Park Region with particular reference to:

a) the nature of the resources available for exploitation
b) the impact of the utilisation of these resources, particulariy mining and tourism.

The Kakadu region would include the yet unproclaimed stage three of the Kakadu Park.

The public hearings have seen submissions from Aboriginal groups, mining companies, environment groups and a Hunters Union.

The members of the committee are:

Sen. Alice Zakharov (Victoria, ALP) Chair.

Sen.-Rosemary Crowley (South Australia, ALP) Deputy Chair.

Sen. Ray Devlin (Tasmania, ALP).
Sen. Noel Chrichton-Browne (Western Australia, Liberal Party).
Sen. Grooms Richardson (NSW, ALP).
Sen. Ronald Boswell (Queensland, National Party).
