Letter to the Editor –

NSW Aboriginal Housing Update
by Robert Ticker

Dear Sir/Madam

I am writing in response to the article "Aboriginal Housing in NSW" by John Williams that appeared in the February edition of your bulletin. (see [1991] AboriginalLB 5; 2(48)pg2.)

As Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, I am committed to resolving some of the difficulties associated with Aboriginal housing in New South Wales. I am pleased to be able to inform your readers that Mr Brian Howe, Minister for Community Services and Health and Mr Joe Schipp, NSW Minister for Housing have agreed that in 1990-91, 50 percent of the Commonwealth/State Housing Agreement funds will be allocated for housing on Aboriginal land. This is a significant break through in Aboriginal housing policy.

I am especially concerned to increase the level of Aboriginal participation in the decision-making process and share the author's view that those best informed and therefore best placed to assess policy are Aboriginal people themselves.

I am confident that through more effective co-ordination and delivery of housing and infrastructure services, Aboriginal people in New South Wales will secure access to more appropriate and adequate housing.

Robert Tickner
