Aboriginal Law Bulletin --- "Update: Coalition to Cut ATSIC Funding; Special Treatment" [1991] AboriginalLawB 59; (1991) 1(53) Aboriginal Law Bulletin 2

Update

Coalition to cut ATSIC Funding

Just 10 weeks after the Senate endorsed the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation Act, the Liberal/National Party Coalition has stated that they will cut the ATSIC budget by $66 million (10%) as part of the proposed government spending cuts designed to subsidise the proposed goods and services tax.

The Sydney Morning Herald (22/11/91, p.15) reported that in addition to the cuts to ATSIC funding, the Community Development Employment Program will be cut by $20 million along with changes to the home ownership scheme and a tightening of eligibility for educational assistance.

Special Treatment

Special Treatment - a documentary about locking up Aboriginal children - will be shown, as part of the series First Australians, on: ABC television at 9.30 pm on Thursday 2nd January, 1992. Produced and directed by Margaret Anne Smith and narrated by Lydia Miller, the film attempts to find out what Aboriginal Juveniles think about how they are treated. It explores past, present and future solutions to the over-representation of Aboriginal people in our criminal justice system, but allows – for a change – Koori kids to tell their own stories, as they comment on the police, the courts and the detention centres which sadly many of them know so well.
