Update

Stolen Generations NT

The Stolen Generations NT office has opened at new premises in Darwin. The office houses Stolen Generations project officers, and research and legal staff of the NAALAS Stolen Generations Litigation Unit. The Litigation Unit works under the direction of a Reference Group, which has representatives from each major NT centre.

Since Stolen Generations NT formed at the Going Home Conference in 1994, the Reference Group has initiated a constitutional challenge to the Aboriginals Ordinance 1918 (NT). This was heard in the High Court as the action Kruger & Ors v The Commonwealth. A decision is expected later in 1996.

Stolen Generations NT is organising a national workshop in Alice Springs on the 4, 5 and 6 September 1996, bringing together survivors of removal policies from around the nation to develop a national approach to a complete reparation package.

Free Speakers on Native Title

The Mabo and Native Title Community Education Project, based at the Aboriginal Law Centre at the University of New South Wales, provides free speakers to schools and community groups. The aim of the Project is to provide people with information about Mabo [No. 2], the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), and their effects on the community, in an accessible and 'plain English' way. Our speakers consist of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal lawyers, senior law students, academics, and other interested people who volunteer their time to the Project.

Speakers can talk for the length of time required by a group. The format of the talk is flexible depending on the needs of the group.

If you are interested in a free speaker, please contact Trevor Blencowe at the Centre on (02) 9385 2850.

Ernabella Arts Trading Pty Ltd

Pitjantjatjara women from Ernabella in Central Australia launched a new trading company, Ernabella Arts Trading Pty Ltd, on 22 August 1996 in Adelaide. The purpose of the company is to develop an Aboriginal-owned enterprise which will promote their arts designs and products to a wider range of people, on a local, national and international basis.

Ernabella is a community of around 400 people, living a relatively traditional lifestyle in Anangu Pitjantjatjara lands in north west South Australia. In 1948, Ernabella women established their own art centre, which has been the focus for the development of a distinctive art style. Artists such as Angkuna Kulyuru, Nyukana Baker, Atipalku Intjalki, and Alison Carroll have their works held in many public and private galleries both in Australia and overseas, including the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra.

Erratum

The May 1996 Aboriginal Law Bulletin carried a casenote by Simon Taylor on the case New South Wales Land Council v ATSIC, which erroneously named the Chief Executive Officer of ATSIC as Miss Lois O'Donoghue (page 29). The casenote was also attributed to the wrong person in the Contents (page 3). These were editorial mistakes. The Aboriginal Law Bulletin sincerely apologies to Simon Taylor for any embarrassment this error may have caused him.
