PILCH Stolen Generation Project

Simeon Beckett

The Public Interest Law Clearing House (PILCH) has established a project to provide legal assistance to Indigenous people who were removed from their families. The project is aimed to coincide with the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission's inquiry into the Stolen Generations. PILCH member law firms have already provided legal assistance to a number of Aboriginal organisations and have, through PILCH, made submissions on important legal issues to the inquiry.

PILCH was established in 1992 by the Public Interest Advocacy Centre, the Law Society of NSW and the Law Foundation of NSW. Its members include a large number of Sydney law firms, barristers, and accountancy firms. PILCH acts as a broker between those seeking advice and its members. Advice is provided free or at a reduced rate for matters that are in the public interest.

The next stage of the PILCH Stolen Generation project involves the investigation of test cases on the issue of removals in NSW, and the preparation of a legal issues paper. The project is due to finish in early 1997. Interested persons should contact Simeon Beckett. at PILCH on (02) 9299 7833.
