Aboriginal Justive Advisory Council (AJAC)

The council, established as the peak advisory body to the NSW Government on justice issues affecting Aboriginal people, has been restructured. Nearly all the positions have now been filled and the Executive Aboriginal Unit of the Council commenced operation on 7 July 1998. Nominations are being sought for Chairperson. Federal Government Moves at Snail's Pace over Stolen Generations Report

The Stolen Generations Report by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission was tabled in May 1997. The Federal Government's response to the Report occurred in December 1997. The Government pledged 18% of the grant money to Link-Up, a national organisation which helps members of the Stolen Generations make contact with their families. However, the release of money to Link-Up for 1998 has been delayed, subject to an `independent evaluation of existing services'. The evaluation is due to finish in September.

Farewell to Toni Bauman...

We miss our dear Toni Bauman, who has been an Editor with the ILB since September 1997. Toni has now left the ILB, to work on her PhD thesis. Thanks, Toni, for your excellent hard work and inspiration.

The departure of Toni could have been a great loss but for her excellent replacements Stephen Bennetts and Natasha Case. We welcome them aboard.

Apology

The editors wish to apologise to Hal Wootten AC QC for an inadvertent omission in his article, 'Ron Brunton & Bringing them home'. On page 5, in the quotation from A Markus' Governing Savages, an ellipsis was omitted following the list of claims ending in the words, `equal citizenship!' This quotation, including the ellipsis, was central to a main criticism of Brunton's article, `Betraying the Victims'. We regret any embarrassment this may have caused Mr Wootten.
