28 July

ATSIC Chairperson Gatjil Djerrkura delivered a blistering attack on Pauline Hanson's and the Federal Government's approaches to Aboriginal' affairs in an address to the UN Working Group on Indigenous Peoples in Geneva.

29 July

David Malangi, an artist and tribal elder of the Manyarrngu people; from Central Arnhem Land, was awarded the, $25,000 Emeritus Award by the Australia Council. His painting, Gurrmirringu's Funeral Scene featured on the Australian one dollar note.

31s July

The Queensland Labor Government introduced a Bill to extinguish native title on mining and pastoral leases by validating leases granted, by the State government in the period between the High Court's 1994 Mabo ruling and the 1996 Wik decision. Premier Peter Beattie intends to compensate Queensland's indigenous people by providing additional infrastructure and services.

1 July

Talking Common Ground, a national conference organised by Rural Landholders for Coexistence, commenced in Charters Towers, Queensland. The conference included workshops on non-adversarial ways of initiating native tide negotiations between pastoralists and Indigenous people.

7 August

Federal Transport Minister, Mark Vaile, announced the Federal Government would be prepared to introduce legislation allowing the Northern Territory Government to compulsorily acquire land along the Darwin to Alice Springs rail corridor. The land is currently the subject of several native title claims.

13 August

The Archives Authority' of NSW has released a guide to all State Archives relating to Aboriginal people. The booklet was compiled in response to the Stolen Children inquiry's recommendation that such information be available to help Aboriginal people research their family origins.

16 August

Federal Health and Family Services Minster, Dr Michael Woodridge, announced funding for the establishment of a Congress for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurses (CATSIN) in. Brisbane to recruit and encourage indigenous students to undertake and remain in nursing and to integrate indigenous health into mainstream nursing.

20. August

Olympic gold medallist Nova Peris-Kneebone was selected to begin the Australian leg of the Olympic torch relay for the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

24 August

The Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre announced it would pursue; a native' title claim covering Crown land from Freycinet Peninsula to Ben Lomond and across to the Tamar Valley. The claim will be based on an untested legal argument which hinges on recognition that the North-East tribal groups held freehold tide to large areas of the East Coast 2000 years ago.

28 August

The South Australian Attorney-General, Mr Griffin, appointed two Aboriginal Justice Officers to educate Indigenous people appearing in Magistrates' Courts. It is hoped that the Officers will help to reduce the number of Aboriginal people imprisoned': for failing to pay fines imposed for conviction on summary offences.

More than 8000 school students attended: anti-racism rallies held across Australia.

30 August

The Coalition government announced that the next federal election would be held on October 3.

31 August

A booklet about Aboriginal burials and cemeteries in New South Wales over the past 2000 years, was launched. In Sad But Loving Memory was written by New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service archaeologist, Mr Denis Byrne. The National Parks and Wildlife Service plans too use ground-penetrating radar to verify. the exact location of burial sites.

1 September

Federal government sources confirmed that there had been discussions, initiated by the Prime Minister's office, about the possible restructuring of ATSIC.' Proposals include the shifting of responsibility for employment and housing, from ATSIC to mainstream Commonwealth departments.

2 September

The first agreement utilising the Indigenous Land Use Agreements provisions of the Native Title (Amendment) Act 1998: was signed. The parties to the agreement were: the Wiradjuri and Walgalu people, the Tumut/Brungle Aboriginal Council and Adelong Consolidated Gold Mines NL was signed. The agreement, gives the local;' Aboriginal community equity in the Adelong gold mine and the right to enforce environmental standards.

5 September

Mutawintji National Park in western NSW was handed back to local traditional owners who will now have a majority on the board of management' This is the first national park to be handed back under the Carr Government's National Parks and Wildlife Amendment (Aboriginal Ownership) Act 1996 (NSW).
