ADOPTION ACT 2009 - SECT 249
Meaning of relative
(1) In this part—
"relative" , of a person, means— (a) a spouse, parent, sibling, child,
grandparent or grandchild of the person; and
(b) for an Aboriginal
person—includes a person who, under Aboriginal tradition, is regarded as a
parent or child of the person; and
(c) for a Torres Strait
Islander—includes a person who, under Island custom, is regarded as a parent
or child of the person.
Note— In relation to a person who is a person’s
spouse, see also section 9A .
(2) To remove any doubt, it is declared that
a reference in this part to a relative of an adopted person or birth parent
does not include a person who was the adopted person’s or birth parent’s
parent, sibling, child, grandparent or grandchild before the adoption but is
not his or her parent, sibling, child, grandparent or grandchild after the
adoption.
