(1)  On the return of a writ of habeas corpus –

(a) the return is to be read; and

(b) an application is to be made for –

(i) the disposition of the person named in the writ; or

(ii) amending or quashing the return.

(2)  If application is made for the discharge of the person in custody, that person is to be heard first, followed by the person denying the right to discharge and then the first-named person in reply.
