(1) A vehicle used or intended for use as a taxi is to be fitted with a roof sign that (a) is affixed to the exterior roof of the vehicle; and(b) has at least one enclosed light that (i) is capable of showing white light towards the front of the vehicle, in the hours between sunset and sunrise, when the taximeter is not operating; and(ii) does not show any white light towards the rear of the vehicle at any time; and(c) displays to the front of the vehicle the word "taxi", or similar words to indicate that the vehicle is a taxi, so that the word or words are clearly legible at a distance of 20 metres from the front of the vehicle during daylight hours or when the taxi roof sign is illuminated.(2) A taxi roof sign is to be switched off if (a) the vehicle is displaying a not-for-hire sign in accordance with regulation 33 ; or(b) the taxi is engaged.(3) A taxi roof sign is to be switched on when the taxi is available for hire unless the taxi is standing for hire in a taxi zone during daylight hours.(4) The responsible operator of a taxi licence must ensure that any vehicle that is being operated as a taxi under the authority of the licence is fitted with a taxi roof sign that (a) complies with this regulation; and(b) is fully operational.Penalty: Fine not exceeding 5 penalty units.(5) A person must not operate a taxi unless the taxi is fitted with a taxi roof sign that (a) complies with this regulation; and(b) is fully operational.Penalty: Fine not exceeding 5 penalty units.
